Skin grafting and tissue reconstruction replace skin or soft tissue that has been lost or damaged. A graft transfers skin without its own blood supply; a flap transfers tissue with a maintained or reconstructed blood supply. The wound and the tissue required determine which approach may be suitable.

What to know

How it is performed

The wound is assessed and prepared, and skin or tissue is taken from a selected donor area. It is secured to cover the defect using the planned graft or flap technique. Dressings and protection support early healing.

Who may consider a consultation?

People with tissue loss, selected wounds, burns or defects after treatment can seek assessment. The cause of a non-healing wound and the wound’s blood supply need review.

Recovery & follow-up

Both the donor and treated areas require care. Pressure, movement and dressing changes are managed according to the operation. Follow-up checks graft take or flap health and addresses rehabilitation where needed.

Risks & considerations

Discuss graft or flap failure, infection, donor-site complications, scarring, colour or texture differences and further treatment.

Questions to bring to your consultation

Ask about donor sites, treatment stages, healing, function and the likely appearance of both the treated area and donor area.
