What to know
How it is performed
Available hymenal remnants or selected nearby vaginal tissue may be joined with sutures according to the anatomy. The surgeon explains the extent of reconstruction, anaesthesia and aftercare. This is different from medically indicated treatment of an obstructive hymen.
Who may consider a consultation?
A person considering hymenal reconstruction can discuss the reasons, expectations and alternatives privately. Consent should be freely given without pressure from others.
Recovery & follow-up
Wound care and restrictions on activity or insertion are explained individually. Attend follow-up to assess healing, and ask how the tissues may change as swelling resolves.
Risks & considerations
Discuss pain, infection, scarring, discomfort with penetration and the possibility of no bleeding or an unwanted result. Surgery cannot prove or restore a person’s sexual history.
Questions to bring to your consultation
Ask what surgery can and cannot achieve, its risks and aftercare. Hymenal appearance or bleeding cannot establish a person’s sexual history.
