What to know
How it is performed
A selected repair may reconstruct disrupted tissue and muscle layers using sutures. Other procedures address different anatomical concerns. Severe tears or continence problems may require coordinated care with pelvic-floor or colorectal specialists.
Who may consider a consultation?
People with a perineal or vaginal concern after childbirth, injury or previous treatment can discuss assessment. Pain or bladder and bowel symptoms should be reviewed as clinical concerns.
Recovery & follow-up
Follow the specific hygiene, wound-care and activity instructions. Pelvic-floor rehabilitation may be appropriate. Clearance for exercise and intimate activity depends on the repair and healing.
Risks & considerations
Discuss infection, wound breakdown, scarring, ongoing pain, altered sensation and incomplete improvement of function or comfort.
Questions to bring to your consultation
Describe symptoms as well as appearance concerns. Ask about pelvic floor assessment, non-surgical alternatives, functional expectations and the limitations of surgery.
