Female to Male Gender Reassignment Surgery (FTM)
If you identify as male but were assigned female at birth, Female-to-Male (FTM) Gender Reassignment Surgery can help align your physical body with your gender identity. Also known as Gender Affirmation Surgery or Sex Reassignment Surgery (SRS), this process involves comprehensive evaluation, counseling, and staged surgical procedures to create a natural male appearance and function.
Chest Surgery (Top Surgery)
Top surgery removes breast tissue to create a well-contoured male chest with minimal scarring.
- Technique: Tumescent liposuction or direct excision, keyhole for small breasts
- Duration: 1–2 hours
- Anesthesia: General or Local with Sedation
- Recovery: Return to work in 2–5 days; avoid strenuous activity for 4–6 weeks; pressure garment for 2–4 weeks
For larger breasts, additional skin removal may be necessary, potentially resulting in horizontal scars along the lower chest.
Genital Surgery
Hysterectomy and Vaginectomy
This stage removes the uterus, ovaries, and optionally the vagina via minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, leaving no visible scars.
- Duration: 2–4 hours
- Anesthesia: General
- Recovery: 2–5 days; 1–2 days hospital stay
Phalloplasty (Penile Reconstruction)
Usually staged over 2–3 procedures spaced 6–9 months apart:
- Stage 1: Free flap creation (usually from forearm) to construct a sensate penis.
Duration: 7–10 hours | Recovery: 10–20 days | Hospital stay: 10–14 days - Stage 2: Penile implant insertion for erectile function, after sensation is established (~6–9 months).
Duration: 1–2 hours | Recovery: 5–7 days - Stage 3: Scrotal reconstruction using labia majora skin and testicular implants.
Duration: 1–2 hours | Recovery: 5–7 days | Outpatient procedure
